👉 Mercedes-Benz TN: The Düsseldorf Transporter
➡️Origins and Generations
- The Mercedes-Benz TN (also referred to as the T1) was a series of vans and minibuses built by Mercedes-Benz from 1977 to 1995. Here are the key highlights:
➡️Design and Variants:
- The TN/T1 was available as a minibus, fitted with a cargo box body, or equipped with a flat cargo bed.
- A double cab version was offered in the latter two configurations.
- Three wheelbases were available, with gross weight ratings ranging from 2.55 to 4.6 tonnes.
- Mercedes-Benz-built gasoline or diesel engines powered the rear-wheel-drive chassis.
- Notably, the 4x4 versions of the Mercedes TN/T1 were modified by Iglhaut, adapting parts from the G-Wagen to the TN/T1 chassis.
- The TN/T1 van was also popular for campervan conversions, offering more space than the Volkswagen Transporter.
➡️Engine Options:
The original TN/T1 lineup included models such as the 207 D, 208, 307 D, and 308.
These models featured different engines and weight classes:
- 207 D, 208: Gross weight of 2,550 kg (5,622 lb) or 2,800 kg (6,173 lb).
- Engine: Four-cylinder diesel engine with 2404 cc and 65 PS (48 kW) (similar to the engine in the Mercedes-Benz 240D and 240GD).
- 307 D, 308: Gross weight of 3,200 kg (7,055 lb) or 3,500 kg (7,716 lb).
- Engine: Four-cylinder petrol engine with 2307 cc and 85 PS (63 kW) (similar to the engine in the Mercedes-Benz 230 “Low-compression Export Version”).
- Diesel engines dominated the market share due to their fuel efficiency and reliability.
➡️Legacy and Successor:
- After 18 years of production, the TN/T1 van series was discontinued in 1995.
- It was succeeded by the T1N, commonly known as the “Sprinter.”
- In the Philippines, a rebadged version of the Mercedes-Benz T1 called the Togo Atlas was locally produced by Morales Motors.
The Mercedes-Benz TN/T1 remains a testament to utility, reliability, and versatility—a true workhorse that served various purposes across different regions. 🌟
